I - ESPERIENZA PROFESSIONALE
Luciano  Di Martino è nato a Cagliari, nella cui Università si è laureato in Medicina e Chirurgia con il massimo dei voti e la lode e specializzato in Chirurgia Generale e in Urologia con il  massimo dei voti e la lode.
Nel 1970 ha conseguito la Libera Docenza in Patologia Speciale Chirurgica e Propedeutica Clinica.
Nel dicembre 2006 è stato insignito della Medaglia d'Oro Al Merito Della Salute Pubblica (Decreto del Presidente della Repubblica 19 settembre 2006), con la seguente motivazione “Per l'efficace lavoro di ricerca e gli importanti risultati raggiunti nel campo della fisiopatologia mammaria e della codificazione di alcune tecniche chirurgiche di ricostruzione mammaria immediata dopo interventi di mastectomia. Il professor Di Martino è conosciuto come uno dei più eminenti esperti italiani nella patologia neoplastica della mammella. Il suo prestigio nazionale e internazionale ha contribuito alla diffusione e alla conoscenza della Sanità Sarda anche   fuori dalla Sardegna, e ha favorito i contatti con molti oncologi italiani e stranieri”
Dal 1964 al 1966, sotto la guida del suo Maestro, Prof. Luciano Provenzale, ha contribuito, con il suo collega Antonio Revignas, allo sviluppo del progetto “Pancolonocopy End to End”. Questa tecnica è stata riconosciuta come una delle 50 scoperte fondamentali del secondo millennio  nel campo della gastroenterologia (Cappel and coll, 2000), una pietra miliare nell'endoscopia digestiva in tutto il mondo.
Dal 1964 al 1968 ha lavorato come Assistente Volontario presso la Clinica Chirurgica dell'Università di Cagliari. Dal 1969 al 1972 Assistente di Ruolo presso gli Istituti di Patologia Speciale Chirurgica delle Università di Catania e Sassari.
Dal  1980 al  2005 ha ricoperto il ruolo di Primario Chirurgo presso l’Ospedale Oncologico di Cagliari.  (Aiuto Chirurgo dal 1972 al 1980).
Professore a contratto presso la Scuola di Specializzazione in Chirurgia dell'Università degli Studi di Cagliari dal 1994 al 2005.
Dal 1995 al 2000 è stato Direttore della Scuola Speciale Nazionale di Chirurgia Mammaria dell'A.C.O.I. (Associazione Chirurghi Ospedalieri Italiani).
Collaboratore straniero dell’ Imperial Cancer Research Fund di Londra (1972 - 1988) e del Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center di New York (1989 - 1998).
Dal 1991 al 1996 è stato Coordinatore Regionale per la Sardegna e dal 1996 al 1998 membro del Consiglio Direttivo Nazionale  dell'Associazione Chirurghi Ospedalieri  Italiani (A.C.O.I.).
Dal 1999 al 2005 è stato Membro del Consiglio Nazionale della Società Italiana di Senologia (S.I.S.).
Dal 2000 al 2005 è stato Componente del Comitato Nazionale per la Formazione Medica Continua (ECM).
Dal 2000 al 2002 è stato Vice Presidente della Società Italiana di Chirurgia (S.I.C.) e membro dell'European Board of Surgery (U.E.M.S.).
Presidente della Società Italiana di Chirurgia Oncologia (S.I.C.O) nel biennio 2007/2009. Di questa Società scientifica è stato Consigliere Nazionale (1999 - 2003), Vice Presidente (2003 - 2005), Presidente entrante  (2005 - 2007).
Per  oltre 30 anni ha svolto la sua attività soprattutto nel campo della cura del cancro della mammella - a livello sia terapeutico che plastico/ricostruttivo - e ha eseguito oltre 5000 interventi chirurgici per quella malattia. Per la sua esperienza in questo campo, in occasione del 105° Convegno della Società Italiana di Chirurgia (Napoli, 2003), gli è stato affidato il compito di presentare la Relazione Biennale sul Cancro della Mammella (uno dei più alti riconoscimenti assegnati dalla Società a uno dei suoi Soci). Un saggio su questo argomento è stato pubblicato e distribuito in 5000 copie e ha riscosso un grande successo, non solo a livello nazionale.

In qualità di Presidente, ha organizzato numerosi eventi scientifici di rilevanza nazionale e internazionale. Tra questi, il  1° il 2° e il 3° International Meeting on recent Progress in Oncology (1987,1991 e 2000), il XVI Congresso Nazionale della Associazione Chirurgi Ospedalieri  Italiani (ACOI) (1997), il  XXVII Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di Chirurgia Oncologica (S.I.C.O.) (2003) e il 107° Congresso Nazionale della Società Italiana di Chirurgia (SIC) (2005).
È autore di oltre 250 pubblicazioni scientifiche - edite anche in riviste straniere - e di alcuni saggi monografici. Ha preso parte a numerose Conferenze Nazionali ed Internazionali in qualità di Relatore, Presidente e/o Moderatore.
Parla correntemente l'inglese, ha una buona conoscenza del francese e, in misura minore, dello spagnolo.

II – ESPERIENZA ROTARIANA
Dal 1985 è socio del Rotary Club Cagliari Est – Distretto 2080 (più volte nominato Presidente e/o Membro  dei Comitati di Servizio Pubblico, Servizio Internazionale, Servizio professionale e Servizio Scambio Giovani ). È stato vicepresidente di club durante l'Anno Rotariano 1992-1993.
Presidente del Club nell'anno rotariano 1995-96. Durante la sua Presidenza, il Club ha ricevuto la Menzione d’Onore dal Presidente del Rotary International Bill Huntley.
Incarichi Distrettuali:
Governatore del Distretto 2080 nel a.r. 2009-2010

Dal 1997al 2009 Presidente Commissione Scambio Giovani (in questo periodo ha organizzato 5 Forum Distrettuali sugli Scambi Giovanili (1 a Oristano, 2 a Cagliari, 1 Sanluri, 1 a Rieti) e 5 Meeting internazionali sul “RI Youth Exchange Program” (Cagliari, 1997 e 2005; Roma, 2003; Pompei, 2004; Alghero/Sassari-2006).

Presidente EEMA - Europian East Mediterranum Africa S.G.- (2014-2016).  
Vice Presidente 2012-2014. Nel 2013 ha organizzato e presieduto  la ”61th EEMA annual Conference Italy-  Connecting Young Minds to Share  Future Beliefs” (Rome 30.Aug/1.Sep).

Ha 3 figli:
- ADRIANA, laureata in Medicina e Chirurgia e Specialista in Neuropsichiatria Infantile.  Direttore della ricerca del Centro per l'autismo - Dr. John e Consuela Phelan Scholar Ricercatore senior - del Child Mind Institute, New York, NY (USA).
- PAOLO, laureato in Ingegneria Meccanica, Izuzu Manager in Michigan (USA).
- GIORGIO, laureato in Giurisprudenza, praticante avvocato presso uno studio legale di Ventimiglia/Italia.

CURRICULUM VITAE

I - PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Luciano Di Martino was born in Cagliari. In 1964 he graduated magna cum laude from the Cagliari University in Medicine and Surgery, where he Specialized magna cum laude in General Surgery and in Urology.
In 1970 he was appointed to the chair of Special Surgical Pathology and Clinical
Propaedeutics.

In December 2006 he was awarded a Gold Medal For Public Health Merit
– through the 19 September 2006 Decree issued by the President of the Italian Republic
– with the following official motivation: “For the effective research work and important results achieved
in the field of breast pathophysiology and the coding of some surgical immediate breast reconstruction techniques following mastectomy operations. Professor Di Martino is known as one of the most eminent Italian experts on neoplastic breast disease. His national and international prestige contributed to the dissemination of Sardinian Health Care outside Sardinia, and fostered contacts with many Italian and foreign oncologists”.

From 1964 to 1966, under the guidance of his Mentor Prof. Luciano Provenzale, with
his colleague Antonio Revignas, he contributed to the development of the “END TO END PANCOLONOSCOPY”. This technique has been recognized as one of the 50 fundamental discoveries of the second millennium in the field of Gastroenterology (Cappel and coll, 2000), a milestone in digestive endoscopy worldwide.

From 1964 to 1968 he worked as a Volunteer Assistant at the Surgical Clinic of the Cagliari University.
From 1969 to 1972 he worked as an Associate Professor at the Special Surgical Pathology Institutes of
the Universities of Catania and Cagliari.

From 1972 to 1980 he was assistant surgeon at the “A. Businco” Oncological Hospital in Cagliari.
From 1980 to May, 2005 he was head surgeon at the “A. Businco” Oncological
Hospital in Cagliari.

From May 2005 to 2015 he has directed the Senology Unit of the S.Antonio Clinic in
Cagliari.

From 1994 to 2005 he has held the position of Contract Professor at the General
Surgery Specialization School of the Cagliari University.

From 1995 to 2000 he was Director of the A.C.O.I. (Italian Association of Hospital
Surgeons) National Special School of Mammary Surgery.

Foreign collaborator of the London Imperial Cancer Research Fund, from 1972 to
1988, and the New York Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, from 1989 to 1998.
From 2000 to 2005 he has been a Referee for the National Committee for Continuous
Medical Education (ECM).

From 1999 to 2005 he has been a Member of the National Board of the Italian Society
of Senology (S.I.S.).

He has been a Member of the European Board of Surgery (U.E.M.S.) (2000/2002)

From 2000 to 2002 he was Vice President of the Italian Society of Surgery (S.I.C.).

He has been President of the Italian Society of Surgical Oncology (S.I.C.O) (2007/2009).
From 1999 to 2003 he was S.I.C.O.’s Member of the National Board, from 2003 to 2005 he was Vice
President, as well as Incoming President from 2005 to 2007.

From 1991 to 1996 he was Regional Coordinator for Sardinia and from 1996 to 1998
a member of the Board of the Italian Association of Hospital Surgeons (A.C.O.I.).

He is fluent in English, has a good knowledge of French and, to a lesser extent, Spanish.

He is the author of more than 250 scientific publications - also published in foreign reviews in English - as well as some essays. He took part in many National and International Conferences as Speaker, Chairman and/or Moderator.

For 30 years he has worked in the field of breast cancer treatment - both at the therapeutic and plastic-reconstructive levels - and performed over 5000 surgical operations for that disease. Due to his great experience in this field, on the occasion of the 105th Conference of the Italian Society of Surgery (Naples, 2003), he was entrusted with the task of presenting the Biannual Report on Breast Cancer (one of the highest awards given by the Society to one of its members). An essay on this topic was published and distributed in 5000 copies, and it was a great success, not only at national level.

As President, he organized many scientific events of national and international relevance.
Among them, the I and II International Meeting on Recent Progress in Oncology (1987 and 1991), the
XVI A.C.O.I. National Surgery Conference (1997), the III International Meeting on Recent Progress in
Oncology (2000), the XXVII National Conference of the Italian Society of Oncological Surgery (S.I.C.O.)
(2003) and the 107th National Conference of the Italian Society of Surgery (SIC) (2005).

II – ROTARIAN EXPERIENCE

Since 1985 he has been a member of the Cagliari Est Rotary Club - District
2080 - Rome, Lazio, Sardinia  (he was repeatedly appointed President and/or Member of the “Public Service”, “International Service”,“Vocational Service” and “Youth Service” Committees. Club Vice president in Rotarian Year1992-93).

He was President of the Club in Rotarian Year 1995-96.
During his Presidency, the club was awarded RI President Bill Huntley’s Mention of
Honour.

From Rotarian year 1997-1998 to r.y. 2008-2009 he has been President of District 2080’s Youth Exchange Committee.
During this period, he organised 5 District Forums on Youth Exchange (1 in Oristano, 2 in Cagliari, 1 in
Sanluri, 1 in Rieti) as well as 5 international meetings on Rotary International’s Youth Exchange Program
(Cagliari -1997 and 2005, Rome- 2003, Pompeii - 2004, and Alghero/Sassari- April 2006)

He was in charge of the following appointments at the Italian Multidistrict Youth Exchange Centre:
- from 2002 to 2009 : President and Head of Long Term Exchanges;
- 1997-1998 and 1998-99: Coordinator for New Prospects and Handicamp;

   Autism Center - Dr. John and Consuela Phelan Scholar Senior Research Scientist -
   The Child Mind Institute, New York, NY (USA).
-  PAOLO, a graduate in Mechanical Engineering, Izuzu Manager in Michigan (USA).
-  GIORGIO, a Law graduate, and a trainee lawyer at a Ventimiglia/Italy law firm.
